LONG-RANGE AIM

The long-range aim of Arisbe is, ideally, to make everything likely to be especially relevant and useful to those interested in Peirce available here, either on-site or by a hypertext link. Any document closely enough related to Peirce to be helpful in understanding him and his work is welcome for access from this page in particular. If you know of further works that are already on-line that ought to be linked to or included here, let us know about it and also about any works of your own or that you can acquire that you would like to have placed on-line here on the website itself: We will either format them as necessary or provide a basic template that you can use to do so, unless you are already skilled at the HTML markup required or want to learn how to do it yourself. (As the website establishes itself this sort of thing should be handled routinely by a volunteer committee from the Peirce telecommunity, but everything is ad hoc in this early stage of development.)

APPROPRIATE MATERIAL

Material appropriate for this page includes:

(a) secondary studies in the strict sense,

(b) works that can be regarded as continuations or developments from Peirce's work, and

(c) works which provide contexts of understanding for his work, for whatever reason, which could include several sub-categories.

As the library grows, categories and structures of organization can be developed as needed, and it should not be taken for granted that the traditional organizational structures for libraries are to be used unquestioningly or uncritically here. Text in digital form has importantly different properties than in its paper incarnation, and we may discover experimentally that different modes and patterns of access will be appropriate than those to which we are presently accustomed.

PURPOSE: ORGANIZED ACCESS

Arisbe in general, as well as this part of it in particular, is not designed for the purpose of filtering out materials in the manner of an editorial channel, such as a professional journal or refereed press, but assumes, rather, that this and other special editorial functions are performed elsewhere. The purpose of Arisbe is to provide and organize access to relevant resources, filtered and otherwise -- access both to documents (in the multi-media sense) and to people -- and to enable and encourage interaction with and among them. Thus critical control in the form of filtering is not supplied by the Arisbe website as a function of its management or support staff, except in the minimal sense implicit in decisions about relevance, though experimentation with various forms and methods of critical control will be encouraged and supported here, and of course the results of traditional editorial filtering will be made available here as extensively and rapidly as possible.

For a more substantial understanding of the rationale of the virtual Arisbe see the several web pages devoted here to an explanation of that in THE FAQS SECTION of the website.
